Dallas Cowboys Preview and FAQ

Are the Cowboys good enough to live up their Super expectations?

Absolutely. The Cowboys have an immensely talented roster that owner Jerry Jones has handpicked to win now. Consider that the Cowboys recently extended the contracts of soon to be 30-year old Terence Newman and 34-year old Terrell Owens for six and four years, respectively. Jones wants a Super Bowl this season, and he’s willing to pay his veteran players to make it happen.

Is Tony Romo a bad postseason quarterback?

First let me say that I believe Romo is a very good quarterback. He can make every throw and his movement in the pocket and improvisation remind me a lot of a younger Brett Favre. That said, he has had some postseason problems, though I don’t really think it crosses his mind that his girlfriend is watching. Instead, I attribute it to inexperience.

Consider: he’s only been a starting quarterback for two full seasons and a pro for four. The expectations are extra high because he plays for the Cowboys, and he’s way ahead of his peers. Watch the postseason this year and you’ll see a less jittery Romo in the pocket making smart throws.

Will he repeat last season’s numbers?

Yes, but like most of the quarterbacks who played out of their shoes last year, he’ll probably see a dip in the numbers. I expect a very good season and I’ve ranked him as the number three fantasy quarterback to have, behind juggernauts Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. He has a lot of targets, and the Cowboys are a lock to have a top three offense. Project for at least 4,000 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions in 2008.

Is his favorite target Terrell Owens still a top three receiver at age 34?

No doubt about it, Owens is aging like a fine wine (lame cliche, I know, but it applies). He’s been absolutely amazing the past two seasons as the Cowboys number one wide receiver, finishing as the number two fantasy player at his position each year. Project for a big season and be sure he’s one of the first two receivers off the board (I have him slightly behind Randy Moss); expect Owens to finish with at least 85 receptions, 1275 yards, and 15 touchdowns.

Will Jason Witten repeat as the number one fantasy tight end?

Yes. The Cowboys have effectively taken advantage of Jason Witten at tight end, and Tony Romo has made him as his favorite target. Whenever you see Romo getting hurried in the pocket, you can bet he’ll be looking for Witten and probably throwing a pass his way. Project for Witten have at least 85 receptions, 1100 yards, and 9 touchdowns.

What do you make of the Marion Barber-Felix Jones situation?

Barber is going to get the majority of the carries (think 275+) and most of the scores as the Cowboys number one runner, while Jones contributes in passing situations. Draft Barber mid-late in the first round (of a 12-team draft), and project for at least 1,250 rushing yards, 30 receptions, 200 receiving yards, and 13 touchdowns.

Do the Cowboys have the best roster of fantasy football studs?

Yes, and it is impressive. If all goes well, this team has a top three quarterback, a top ten running back, a top three wide receiver, and the number one fantasy tight end, making the Cowboys the team to draft this year. Coming in a close second: Indianapolis.
