Fantasy Football Rundown: Daily News You Can Use

Seattle is reportedly struggling with some minor injuries. T.J. Houshmandzadeh, for example, didn’t finish practice Monday afternoon because his ankle was bothering him. Similarly tackle Walter Jones and cornerback Marcus Trufant both left early with back issues. However, the absence of Lofa Tatupu — his second absence in three practices — is being attributed to coach Jim Mora giving the veterans some rest. (Source: NFL.com)

Steve Smith could miss the entire preseason with a shoulder injury, but the Panthers wide receiver hopes to be ready for the team’s regular season opener against Philadelphia on September 13. Says agent Derrick Fox, “Steve has a high threshold of pain, and he’s in a lot of pain, so something’s off-kilter.” (Source: Charlotte Observer)

Terrell Owens’ toe injury is reportedly bothering him enough to keep him out of walkthroughs Tuesday morning. The receiver updated his Twitter account by tweeting, “Damn my toe is aching!” He should give a run-down on the injury after tonight’s practice session. (Source: NFL.com)

Michael Vick isn’t drawing interest from many teams — according to Pro Football Talk, 26 have already denied they have any interset in him — but the best bet right now is Baltimore, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortenson. Furthermore, one team that can certainly be crossed off the list is Washington, per Vick’s agent who says there is “no chance” his client goes there. Finally, coach Tony Dungy believes a deal will get done soon, telling Mike and Mike, “I think something’s gonna happen this week.” The combination of these stories is enough to suggest a deal will get done soon (or Vick’s agent wouldn’t have ruled out a team) and Baltimore is the most likely landing zone.

When the Patriots take the field in their preseason opener, expect Tom Brady to be on the field. “There is no reason why I wouldn’t,” explained the quarterback. “I’ve been out here doing everything.” Team owner Robert Kraft is also confident the golden boy will play. “I’ll bet you 1,000 lottery tickets that [Brady] starts the first [preseason] game,” Kraft said during a press conference. Though we’ve all gotten used to not seeing LaDainian Tomlinson during preseason, the 30 year old running back is quite anxious to see the field this year. “I want to play,” Tomlinson said Monday.  “We’ll see where that takes us.  It’s one thing for me to want to play and then it’s another thing, the coaches make the decision.  We’ll see where we end up.” Translation: Tomlinson may see limited time, but the coaches don’t want to take any chances. It would be a surprise to see him on the field often, if at all. (Source: Ventura County Star)

Running back Shaun Alexander still wants to play, telling Sporting News’ Matt Crossman, “I’m not retired. I feel like I’ve got a handful of good years left.  I’m going to train like that.” Alexander may still land himself on a roster, but his role would be limited and he would likely see very little field time. The Kansas City Chiefs have temporarily benched one of the few good — or at least recognizable – players on the roster, Dwayne Bowe. The move shouldn’t have any lasting effects, though it could motivate Bowe to work harder before the start of the season. In the end, don’t expect Bowe to miss any meaningful playing time.
