Ten Facts You Need to Know About Bernard Berrian

Posted by tomvanwyhe

Known for circus catches and jaw-dropping athleticism, Bernard Berrian has given the Minnesota Vikigns options. After joining the team last season, Berrian quickly made an impact. Though he dropped from 71 receptions the season before in Chicago to 48 in Minnesota, he managed to maintain his receiving yards (951-964) while scoring more receiving touchdowns (5-7).

Here are ten more facts you need to know about Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Bernard Berrian.

(1) He has a career average of 16.0 yards per reception, but last season he posted an incredible 20.1 yards per catch, thanks in part to a 99-yard reception week 13 against the Chicago Bears. Talk about a sweet grab.

(2) Expecting his numbers to skyrocket with the addition of Brett Favre? Don’t hold your breath. Though Favre’s impact will certainly be felt, it’s also worth noting that he has thrown more than eight touchdowns to any one receiver only once since 2005. Berrian finished with seven touchdown receptions last season.

(3) Berrian is tied for 15th for receiving touchdowns since 2006. He has been relatively consistent in that aspect during the time frame with 20 touchdowns.. Last season he was tied for 12th in receiving touchdowns.

(4) Berrian’s drops have increased each of the past three seasons, peaking in 2008 when he dropped seven passes. He was tied for 13th in the league, alongside Dallas Clark and others. Exclusively among wide receivers, Berrian was tied for 11th in drops.

(5) His week 13 catch that covered the football field was his most notable reception, but did you know Berrian caught seven passes of 40 or more yards? Only Greg Jennings, who had 32 more receptions, finished with more “big plays.” Final note: about one of every seven of Berrian’s receptions covered at least 40 yards.

(6) Among players with 20 or more receptions, only Devery Henderson had a greater yards per reception average last season, posting an impressive 24.8. Among receivers with at least 33 receptions, Berrian’s 20.1 leads the pack.

(7) Berrian failed to record a reception in two games last season and in another four he caught two or fewer. In six other games, he caught at least four receptions. His limited involvement in the passing game in terms of overall receptions made him a relatively inconsistent fantasy prospect in that regard.

(8) As one can expect, Berrian’s limited receptions also kept him from posting much in terms of receiving yards. Berrian had six games with fewer than 40 receiving yards, but thanks to his high average, he was able to post eight games with more than 75 receiving yards and four games with at least 100 yards. Again, he wasn’t particularly consistent, but he certainly had his wow moments.

(9) One aspect fantasy owners may have appreciated: Berrian’s seven receiving touchdowns came in seven separate games. Rather than seeing inflated year-end numbers thanks to a couple ultra-impressive games with two or more touchdowns, Berrian’s seven scores were spread out between weeks 5, 6, 7, 9, 13, 15, and (unfortunately) 17.

(10) Many of Berrian’s yards came after the catch. In fact, the Vikings star receiver finished 5th in the NFL with 293 yards. That number was inflated a bit thanks to the 99-yard reception I’ve mentioned multiple times in this article. You know what? Just go watch it right now. Then watch this video. I’m out.
