Target Review - Week 6
Posted by kyle smithIt’s Monday, so it’s time to get going on our weekly routine of looking at wide receiver targets from the previous day’s NFL action.
- Sidney Rice, Minnesota Vikings: Until yesterday, Bernard Berrian had been targeted more than Rice by Vikings quarterback Brett Favre in every game except during Week 1, when Berrian was still hurting. That changed yesterday, when Favre looked Rice’s way seven times and Berrian’s way five times. While Berrian did score in the contest, he caught just three passes for 18 yards, while Rice caught six passes for 176 yards. For the season, they each have two touchdown catches, but Rice has one more reception than Berrian on the year (23 to 22), along with 409 receiving yards to Berrian’s 234 (a difference of 175 yards).
- Lee Evans, Buffalo Bills: Unlike his teammate, Terrell Owens, at least Evans can show a bit of burst with the ball in his hands after the catch. He did so yesterday in Buffalo’s win over the Jets, taking a pass 37 yards to the end zone. That catch was one of four for 68 yards in the game, a contest that he was targeted a team-high 11 times in. With Trent Edwards going out with a concussion after five passes, Ryan Fitzpatrick was the one who threw the scoring pass, and who looked Evans’ way often.
- Hakeem Nicks, New York Giants: Nicks led the Giants with five catches for 114 yards in New York’s loss to the Saints, though his eight targets were one fewer than Mario Manningham’s nine. Still, it represents an important fact – the rookie first-round pick is clearly being trusted by Eli Manning, and has delivered on that trust. Nicks was targeted a team-high six times last week by a combination of Manning and David Carr, and has scored in three straight games.
- Jermichael Finley, Green Bay Packers: The Packers tight end was targeted five times in Green Bay’s shutout win over the Lions on Sunday, and he caught all five passes for 54 yards. In what is a clear sign that Finley is becoming the go-to guy for Aaron Rodgers at tight end, Finley was targeted more than fellow tight end Donald Lee for the second week in a row and the third time in four games.
Other Week 6 target numbers of interest: Dwayne Bowe, 14; Derrick Mason, 12; Mohammed Massaquoi, Dustin Keller, 10; Mike Thomas, Braylon Edwards, 9; Domenik Hixon, Deion Branch, 7.
